Tattoo Parties??

Waiting at the doctor’s office yesterday, one of the nurse’s daughters came in. Turns out she’s 17 and her mom had made her come in for this appointment. While she was waiting her turn, she went back to the office area to show one of the receptionists her new tattoo. Apparently she had just had it done this weekend, and it was still very tender.

Curious, I asked her at what studio she had gotten it done. To my surprise, she said she hadn’t gotten it done at a studio, she had gotten it done at her aunt’s house. Her aunt had had a tattoo party, and she was one of ten people who had been tattooed that evening. If the other tattooes were as large as hers was (hers was on the base of her back and was probably 10 inches wide by 6 inches tall), then that tattoo artist was busy for quite a while!

Now, I’m both a fan of tattooes and a fan of “buy stuff” parties (think Pampered Chef kitchen ware, PartyLite candles, Longaberger baskets – all of which have sucked me into buying something at least once), I’m trying to imagine which of my various friends and associates would attend a tattoo party. How do you decide the guest list?? Who’s your target customer? And then the time-honored munchies at a “buy stuff” party – how do you adjust them for folks who might be squeamish at the little bit of blood you might see as someone else’s tattoo is getting inked? I assume the beverages end up being a little bit stronger than Coke…

Somehow this seems quite the Martha-Stewartish suburbanite twist on the typical group of girls/guys getting themselves psyched up some weekend evening and daring each other to get a tattoo. This is something you put in your DayTimer and leave yourself a reminder to bring a casserole. Too weird! (But worth an experiment if I have enough like-minded friends! Kel, Miche, Vanessa, Sheri, Denice… want to try a different kind of party??)

  1. One of the woman at my office just had one (she’s in her 50’s!)It lasted about 5 hours and the beverages WERE apparently much stronger than soda according to her stories afterward 🙂

  2. Don’t count on me to be at that party, Tina!!
I’m a bit too old fashioned to be sporting a tattoo. My legs are developing tattoo’s all on their own, thanks to my ever worsening broken veins!! Pass the wine, please!

  6. Hi, I don’t think that you’ll need a little bit more than coke for a tattoo party from what I’ve heard because I heard that they don’t even hurt that much. But you are suppose to get them in fatty places and if you get it where your skin is tight then you should be okay. But it all depends on how sensitive you are. But I am 14 and i live in M.D and I have parental consent and I wanted to know how do I go about getting a tattoo and I am aware of the chances and I am positive of what I want. So if you have any information please send me an instant message.

  13. Ok to answer some of the questions first. Anyone who ever does a tattoo should be lisenced and totally sterile! Yes having a tat party at your house is legal. The legal end has to with the artist not you or the venue. You may have drinks stronger than coke but the paperwork has to be signed before hand.

  17. I do tattoo parties at peoples homes. My work is good and everything is clean. I have done the Sumner abate biker poker run 2008, and also several others. I run a special that for the hostess/host receives a $50.00 tattoo or credit towards their tattoo every five people that get $50 tattoos at there party. I working on a site to show some of my work. I usually know people I know but as long as I can be guaranteed my safety I will travel up to 50 miles depending on number of people. cherylmiguelacevedo@yahoo.com saint louis mi

  18. Tattoo parties are illegal in Philadelphia. They are the 3rd largest vector for HepC in the city. Licensing and oversight is stringent here. Licensed tattoo artists are required to renew their blood borne pathogens education yearly.
MOST “ARTISTS” AT TATTOO PARTIES IN PHILADELPHIA ARE UNTRAINED
I mean seriously, tattoos are minor surgery. Why would you want that in your house?
The amount of precautions artists take to keep you safe factor into the price of the tattoo. The training and expertise of your artist is worth it. Permanent scarring and health risks are the rewards of being cheap.
